Abstract

In addition to physical abilities, fitness and personality traits can also be factors affecting sports performance. In this regard, the present study aimed to present a model of the effect of emotional intelligence on sports performance with the mediating role of spiritual intelligence of athletes participating in the 27th Cultural-Sports Olympiad of the Technical and Vocational University. This research was of an applied, quantitative and descriptive-survey type. The statistical population included male students participating in the 27th Cultural-Sports Olympiad of the Technical and Vocational University in 1402, whose number was 1200 according to the inquiry from the organizing committee, of which 291 were selected randomly according to the Cochran formula. To collect data, the Emmons Spiritual Intelligence Questionnaire (2000), Cherniss Emotional Intelligence (1998) and Charbonneau Sports Performance (2001) were used. In order to analyze the data, structural equation modeling and bootstrap indirect effect tests were used at a significance level of 0.05 and in smart PLS3.1.1 software. The results of the study showed that spiritual intelligence (p=0.001) and emotional intelligence (p=0.001) have a positive and significant effect on sports performance and emotional intelligence has a positive and significant effect on spiritual intelligence (p=0.001). Spiritual intelligence also plays a mediating role in the effect of emotional intelligence on sports performance (p=0.001). Therefore, athletes who have high intelligence and have more knowledge of their abilities and skills can have better sports performance.
