[English]

This study aimed to understand the psychological and behavioral consequences of exposure to fitness-related posts on Instagram among high school girls. The research employed a qualitative descriptive phenomenological approach. Data were collected through an online questionnaire containing both closed and open-ended questions, completed by 323 Girl students in Dezful, Iran. Thematic analysis was conducted using Colaizzi’s method. Findings were categorized into six main themes: motivational impacts, beauty ideals and body perfection motives, negative psychological reactions, real-life barriers to body imitation, unstable motivation and lack of practical action, and entertainment-oriented use coupled with reduced daily physical activity. The conceptual model revealed that initial motivation for exercise and physical beauty-driven by comparisons with idealized bodies and social expectations-often led to frustration, lowered self-esteem, and self-blame due to limited resources and environmental support. Fitness content on Instagram generated a dual, contradictory, and complex experience for adolescent girls. On one hand, it could be inspiring and spark positive intentions toward physical activity, healthy eating, and self-improvement. On the other hand, such motivation was often superficial, short-lived, and ineffective in changing behavior. Ultimately, passive content consumption replaced active lifestyle engagement. The results highlight the need for body media literacy education and preventive interventions to promote mental and behavioral health among adolescent girls.
