Despite the enormous potential of Iran's coasts for sports tourism development, the gap between potential and actual performance stems from a vacuum in managerial knowledge. This study aims to answer the question “What do destination managers need to know?” by identifying critical knowledge requirements and analyzing the causal network linking these requirements, destination leadership, and coastal sports tourism competitiveness. Using a sequential exploratory mixed-method design, first, 18 knowledge requirements were screened from 29 factors through the Fuzzy Delphi Method based on the consensus of 31 experts. Then, Fuzzy DEMATEL was applied with 23 experts to analyze causal relationships among these requirements, six leadership dimensions, and five competitiveness components within a 29×29 matrix. Findings reveal that all competitiveness components (from infrastructure to market share) are pure “effects” of the system, while the core drivers consist of knowledge requirements; the top five causal factors are: tourist behavior analysis, inter-sectoral networking, destination branding, sustainable development management, and emerging technologies. These factors shape competitiveness by influencing strategic and network leadership. The results challenge infrastructure-centered and charismatic leadership models and offer a “causal compass” for knowledge investment, guiding the transition to knowledge-based development along Iran's coasts.
